Nutrition Basics

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Nutrition Basics course actively guides your students in learning lessons in English and Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts & Music and P.E. Students will understand and obtain a balanced message about eating sensibly, becoming physically active, and practicing healthy behaviors, leading to lifelong behavior changes that will help them grow into healthier, safer and more effective citizens.
FIRST GRADE GLEs
- Recognize MyPyramid and state that it represents the five major food groups plus the fats and oils
- State three things MyPyramid teaches: a) Eat a variety of foods b) Eat from each food group every day for a balanced diet c) Eat everything in moderation
- Practice manipulative and locomotor skills
SECOND GRADE GLEs
- List five groups that make up the food pyramid
- Match foods to the group they belong
- Explain how to create a balanced diet
- Demonstrate understanding of “MyPyramid” by matching food to a blank pyramid
- Practice manipulative and locomotor skills
THIRD GRADE GLEs
- Exhibit an understanding of MyPyramid by being able to classify different foods according to the food groups
- Identify a well-balanced meal
- Identify how many servings of each food group are needed per day
- Understand the importance of eating breakfast
- Understand the importance of being physically active every day

Grade 1: Getting to Know MyPyramid
The 1st Grade Introduction to Nutrition Basics is broken down into 4 sections. The 4 sections are as follows: I Eat Peas...Sometimes Cheese, One Hundred Bounces!, Healthy Foods Help Us Grow, and I Need...I Want...Skill development benchmarks are included within each section.
Grade 2: Nutrition Basics
The 2nd Grade Introduction to Nutrition Basics is broken down into 5 sections. The 5 sections are as follows: My Favorite Foods, Fruits & Fractions "Tasting Party," MyPyramid Activities, Louisiana Food Tour, and a Fidget Buster. Skill development benchmarks are included within each section.
Grade 3: Right Foods, Right Size
The 3rd Grade Back to School lesson is broken down into 6 sections. The 6 sections are as follows: Food group Rumble!, What Can You Buy for $5.00, Goodhealth Family Meals, Louisiana Foods to Help You Grow, MyPyramid Food Mobile, and Five 'n Jive Fitness Card: Jog-Run-Walk. Skill development benchmarks are included within each section.
